bbwf_book_press_original

As sponsors of the Byron Bay Writers Festival 2013 we’ve been allocated our very own courtesy bus pick up. If you are staying with us during the festival your trip to the site will be even easier. The courtesy bus picks up every half hour from Atlantic (just hail the driver) and takes you to the site.

With a stellar line-up including Archie Roach, Maxine McKew, Simon Crean, Ross Coulthart, Michael Leunig, John Cantwell, Peter FitzSimons, Sarah Turnbull, DBC Pierre, Andrea Goldsmith, Peter Carey, MJ Hyland, Anne Summers, Cate Kennedy and George Megalogenis, audiences will be spoilt for choice. And Sunday 4 August sees a marquee dedicated to young readers, hosted by Maddie and POSSUM, from Prime 7. A diverse range of local writers will also add spice to an already flavoursome program. “Whether you find pleasure in poetry, performance, history, humour, fiction, non-fiction or journalism, you’ll discover writers and conversations to sate your cravings. You’ll be challenged, you’ll be surprised, you’ll have encounters with big thinkers, you’ll laugh and probably you’ll cry, but you’ll be richly rewarded.” The entire program is available online. Don’t delay: features will sell out and workshop numbers are strictly limited.

Byron Bay has been listed as the No.1 Hot Spot for whale watching by NSW National Parks.

Every year the Humpback Whales slowly make their way north past Byron Bay on their annual migratory route to the warmer tropical waters and returning south during Spring.  As they say location, location, location and the Byron Bay Lighthouse offers a brilliant location for whale watching.

THOMAS CAMPBELL – OUR NEXT ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Thomas Campbell Artist Residency #6

We are pleased to announce that the successful artist for The Art Park / Atlantic Artist Residency #6 is Thomas Campbell from the USA.

Thomas was born in Laguna Beach, California in 1969 and currently lives in Bonny Doon, California, USA.

He is a self-taught painter, sculptor, photographer, filmmaker and music producer. The nexus of Campbell’s creative centric life was nurtured by skateboarding culture in the 1980′s and 90′s.

Thomas grew up surfing and skating in southern California before moving to New York in the 1980s, where he immersed himself in the skate/street art/punk/hip hop/hell-raising scene that rotated around the central axis of Alleged Gallery. In that setting he came to know and be associated with the artists that would go on to make up San Francisco’s Mission School painters and the generation that would be at least loosely defined by the Beautiful Losers exhibition in 2004.

Campbell has mounted solo exhibitions in New York, Paris,Tokyo,Denmark, The Netherlands,San Francisco,Los Angeles, and Morocco. Currently Campbell spends most of his time in his home studio in Bonny Doon, California working on paintings, sculpture and other artistic junk. From 1997 to 2009 Campbell produced and directed three feature length surf films The Seedling, Sprout and The Present. The filming of which has taken him to the far corners of the earth (Indonesia,Cape Verde, Sri Lanka,South Africa and New Zealand to name a few).

Campbell is also the creative director of Galaxia, a small, independent record label based in Santa Cruz, California, that he has run with his partner Greg Lamson since 1992. Galaxia has released recordings by artists such as Tommy Guerrero, The Mumlers, Ray Barbee, Peggy Honeywell, The Mattson 2, The Amalgamated Sons of Rest (Will Oldham, Jason Molina and Allister Roberts), Tomorrow’s Tulips and The Black Heart Procession. Most of these artist have appeared in the soundtracks to Campbell’s films or have played live at his various screenings and exhibitions.
